Preheat oven to 425
- 2 packs rapid rise yeast
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1.5 cups warm water
- 3.5 cups flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 cups hot water
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 1 large egg
- Place yeast, sugar and water in bowl. Stir to dissolve and let stand for 7 mins. There should be bubbles forming. If not, let stand another 3 mins. If still not, start over.
- Add flour and salt and mix by hand to rough dough. Transfer to a table top and knead till smooth.
- Cut into 8 equal pieces and roll into long thin ropes about 14 inches long. Twist into a pretzel or any shape you like.
- Pour 2 boiling cups of water into a bowl and stir baking powder into it. Dip each pretzel into it one at a time and then do the other side.
- Place on parchment paper.
For salted pretzels:
1. Brush beaten egg onto the pretzels.
2. Sprinkle lightly with Kosher salt.
3. Bake in hot oven for 12-15 mins until golden brown.
4. Remove pretzels from oven and allow to cool for a few mins.
For cinnamon sugar pretzels:
1. Mix together 4 tbls melted margarine, 2 tbls sugar and 1 tsp cinnamon.
2. Brush onto pretzels saving extra.
3. Bake in hot oven for 12-15 mins until golden brown.Remove from oven and brush on more of the cinnamon mixture.
Makes 8 pretzels
